What is Moral Injury?

Moral injury is the lasting emotional, psychological, social, behavioral, and spiritual impacts of actions that violate a service member’s core moral values and behavioral expectations of self or others (Litz et al., 2009). It is damage done to one’s moral compass and the third leg in the hidden wounds triad: PTS, TBI, and Moral Injury.

Our Mission

MCF empowers veteran communities by addressing moral injury through a coalition-based model, bringing together veteran-led organizations and taking action on critical issues affecting the veteran community. We amplify members’ voices through media engagements, Congressional testimonies, and strategic partnerships to create lasting, positive change.

Our Story

MCF was formed in the wake of the Afghanistan collapse. Individuals and organizations came together to right a wrong and ensure we kept the promises made to our foreign partners. Since then, we’ve become a network resource to take care of Veterans and align like-minded Veteran Service Organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about moral injury and how the Moral Compass Federation supports veterans.

Why is moral injury important to address?

Moral injury can have lasting psychological effects on veterans, affecting their mental health and ability to reintegrate into civilian life. By addressing moral injury, MCF aims to promote healing, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose among veterans, ensuring they receive the support and recognition they deserve.

How does MCF work with government agencies and private sector stakeholders?

MCF collaborates with government bodies, private sector entities, non-profit organizations, and academia to align initiatives, advocate for sound policies, and create opportunities for veteran communities to discuss and address moral injury in an “all things” approach. Our goal is to build a comprehensive network that bridges gaps and ensures long-term impact.

How does MCF support its member organizations?

MCF amplifies the impact of its member organizations by awarding micro-grants for events and campaigns, featuring them on social media, and providing opportunities for their voices to be heard through articles, media appearances, congressional testimony, and policy engagements. We bring the ground truth to the forefront and support member organizations’ important work.

What is MCF's Health Initiative Program and How Does It Address Moral Injury?

The MCF Health Initiatives Program supports a coalition of health-focused organizations dedicated to addressing moral injury and promoting moral recovery. We provide data collection, education, advocacy, and funding support to help these organizations create interdisciplinary systems of care with durable sources of public and private funding. By fostering collaboration and ensuring effective communication among stakeholders, we amplify veteran leadership with a goal of improving outcomes for those affected by moral injury. Our program emphasizes quantitative metrics and qualitative outcomes to drive evidence-based advocacy and education efforts.

What are MCF's Afghanistan Initiatives and How Do They Address Moral Injury?

MCF’s Afghanistan Initiatives were launched in response to the Afghanistan withdrawal crisis. MCF coordinates with veteran-led organizations and allies to fulfill the promises made to our most trusted Afghan partners. Our initiatives include resettlement support, sponsorship resources an referals, and Hill engagement to ensure we are implementing sound policy. We believe that ensuring our allies’ safety is not only a moral obligation but also a crucial step in addressing the moral injury experienced by veterans involved in these operations.

How does MCF measure the success of its programs?

We use both quantitative metrics and qualitative outcomes to assess the impact of our initiatives. This approach ensures that we are addressing the needs of member organizations so they can continue making measurable difference in service members and their families’ lives.

What kind of organizations can become members or partners of MCF?

MCF members are grassroots, veteran-led organizations that are committed to addressing moral injury and supporting veterans in a major aspect of their mission. We seek partnerships with organizations of all sizes and backgrounds with whom we find mission alignment, collaborative spirit, and a catalyst for action.
